Have you ever been completely caught up in a thought, emotion or situation, only to realize later that you reacted without really choosing your response?
Learning how to step into the Observer position can help you create space between what happens to you and what you do next.
The Observer is an important concept in Reality Transurfing and is also closely related to practices of self-awareness, mindfulness and conscious awareness.
What Is the Observer Position?
Imagine yourself as an actor on a stage. The actor is experiencing the story: thinking, feeling and reacting to everything happening around them.
Now imagine that you are also the director watching the actor.
You haven’t disconnected from the experience. You’ve simply become aware that you are having the experience.
Instead of thinking: “I’m anxious.”
You might notice: “I’m aware that I’m experiencing anxiety.”
That small shift creates psychological distance between you and the story running through your mind.
How to Become the Observer
The next time you notice a strong thought or emotional reaction, don’t immediately try to change it.
Notice it.
Become curious.
Try saying: “Interesting. I notice my mind is telling me…”
Then observe the thought without judging it or automatically following it.
You can also bring your attention to your breathing, your body and the sounds around you. This helps move your awareness away from being completely absorbed in your internal dialogue.
Awareness Creates Choice
You may not control every thought that enters your mind, but you can become more conscious of what happens next.
When you learn to observe your thoughts instead of automatically reacting to them, you create a moment in which a different response becomes possible.
In Reality Transurfing, becoming the Observer is about waking up inside your experience.
You are the actor.
But you can also become the one watching the actor, and consciously choosing what happens next.
